100th Independence Day 2019

Summary: The Embassy commemorated 100 years of independence with the Afghan-British diaspora.

The Embassy hosted an evening reception to mark one hundred years since the victory of King Amanullah Khan in the restitution of the independence of Afghanistan, through the signing of the landmark Afghan-Anglo Treaty in 1919. Members of the diaspora used this opportunity to come together on the national day to mark the occasion with traditional music and food.

In his address, Ambassador Jawad talked of the King’s vision for peace in Afghanistan and stressed the need to empower the same sprit today. Moreover, a moment’s silence was held to remember those who had lost their lives in the days leading up to the Independence Day, in Kabul and Jalalabad respectively.
